Artist Bio:

2020 Jury prize winner for the Wallace Arts Award, Wanda Gillespie is a contemporary artist/ mystical archaeologist based in Tāmaki Makaurau, Auckland. Her wood carved sculptural artefacts seek to make visible the mysterious worlds of the invisible. Gillespie often develops written pieces supporting her installations, researching and referencing real historical events, creating slippages between real and imagined. The sculptures then become artefacts, validating the existence of her invented narratives. Based in Aotearoa New Zealand, and often in Australia for exhibitions, Gillespie employs native woods and nuts to connect with the material culture of these two countries. She completed her BFA at Elam School of Fine Arts in 2003 and an MFA at Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne in 2009. Gillespie has an extensive exhibition history and has been the recipient of many awards for her work including the ARTAND Australia Credit Suisse Private Banking Contemporary Art Award and a residency at the Cite Des Arts, Paris, through the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Specialist valuation NZ$3,300.00
