Emma Bass – Earthly Delight

Winning Bid: $1,120.00

Emma Bass
Earthly Delight, 2020
Archival giclée print, unframed. 600 x 600 mm

Earthly Delight was created whilst living in New Zealand during complete Covid Lockdown. We are living with a new perspective in a time filled with greater anxiety and uncertainty. To watch the plethora of news is beyond belief and overwhelming. But down here in our New Zealand safe bubbles, we quickly adapted to life within our new ‘normal’. I drew inspiration from Hieronymus Bosch’s extraordinary painting The Garden of Earthly Delights (c. 1515), which portrays the temptations on Earth and man’s gradual fall into sin. I’ve always been drawn to the colours used within this artwork, and wanted to pay homage to them. There is a mix of artificial and natural flora which references the surreal and illusory elements of our current existence – the fake news, our ridiculous world leaders, pollution and climate change. Valued at: NZ$1,600.00

Artist Bio:

Emma Bass is an established artist with a colourful and distinctive take on flora, photography and life. Bass was born in Liberia, West Africa in 1967 and lived in England before arriving in New Zealand aged six, where she still resides in the beautiful twin-harbour city of Auckland. A former nurse, Emma went to live in London in the early 1990s where she fell in love with photography at the Camera Club in Leicester Square. Here she learnt darkroom techniques and took part in her first group exhibition. On her return to New Zealand, she became one of that country’s most adaptable commercial photographers, working freelance for over 20 years and winning awards. Emma’s diverse portfolio is testament to her compassionate, yet thorough, approach. In 1992, Emma began exhibiting her art photography and has established a strong following. In 2016, she was the only New Zealand artist to be invited to appear at the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition in London, and she was shortlisted as a finalist again in 2019. She continues on her exploration of examining the nature of beauty with her ever growing collection of Floral Portraits. More info via emmabass.co.nz.
